Project 2 - Biology - "Cell me on it"

posted Oct 22, 2013, 3:55 AM by Michael Reilly   [ updated Nov 17, 2013, 12:16 PM ]
The next unit of Biology reviews fun stuff like cells, respiration, photosynthesis, enzymes and more!  It's time to connect the science, language arts and technology with this, and maybe your Health class too!

You want diseases?  We got diseases! You will research a cellular disease, and create some cool technology project about it.  You'll need to write up a proposal for what science you will address, and how you will do so.  Dr. Rohrbaugh will have more information for you, see attachment below.

You will need to create an annotated bibliography, and a 2 page research paper, to address the Language Arts and Technology standards for Research/Citation. We are looking for individual, facts and explain science of the disease.  For Language Arts, we are also reviewing the concept of Persuasion about a disease - raising awareness and maybe clearing misconceptions about it.

Tech: you are learning video editing, but you do NOT have to do a video for this project.  You can do whatever tech you like for the project, but EACH PERSON needs to accomplish the basic video assignments individually.

List of Potential Diseases:
Below is a list of potential options.  If you have something specific you wish to study not on this list it must be approved before you may continue.
Melanoma    Leukemia    Cystic Fibrosis    Sickle Cell Anemia    Alzheimer's Disease
Muscular Dystrophy        Diabetes        Parkinson's Disease    Down Syndrome        Pneumonia
Rheumatoid Arthritis        MRSA        Huntington's Disease    Turner syndrome        Strep Throat
Checkpoints (check the Calendar too!):
  • 10/22 - Start project, assign teams
  • 10/28 - Proposals due -  should be on a "Proposal Page" of your team website.  Your team website should be submitted to THIS ONLINE FORM.
  • 10/30 - Video "Adobe GS Videos" due.
  • 10/31 or 11/1 (non-lab) - Storyboard/script draft due - your team should work together, unless there is a special thing that needs to be developed by an individual.  See the links on the "Helpful Links" page.  Also, your team site should have a plan on it, based on your script and storyboard.   Make the general story outline first, storyboard second, script third, then schedule everything!  Here's the rubric for this part.
  • 11/7 and 11/8- Examples of product AND Final Storyboards/scripts due (or earlier!)
  • 11/12 or 11/13- Final research paper and annotated bibs due
  • 11/25-11/29 is Thanksgiving Week!
  • **Remember: you miss a week for Thanksgiving, and a couple of other days will probably be weird.
  • 12/5- Language Arts performance exam
  • 12/6 - Technology - Personal Portfolio Due
  • 12/10 or 12/11- Research and persuasion test
  • Show and Tell is 12/12/13 (tentative, could change)
